Due to the main water line that had burst in the prison, inmate access to the shower areas had been canceled for the past two days. It was now 7:00 PM. The prison guards had been rotating access to one specific shower area that was still operational for the entire prison all day long. Since there were 3,557 inmates, they were only about halfway done. The time allotted to shower had been reduced to only five minutes. When the announcement was made on Robert’s tier and row that access to showers was going to be allowed, all of the men cheered and clapped their hands. All except for Shorty and Psycho, who had been drinking from their latest batch of pruno since 4:00 PM in their cell and were both extremely drunk. They were known trouble makers to the guards and were constantly on “loss of privilege” status for minor prison infractions. Most of the inmates on the row hated them both. They were extorting from all of the newer inmates and the more seasoned convicts stayed away from them because they were annoying.

“I say we do it tonight,” whispered Psycho with slurred speech.

“The shank is ready to go. I can order it up,” said Shorty quietly. He was 24 years old with short black hair, dark brown eyes, and a neatly trimmed broom handle mustache. He was just under five feet tall. Psycho nodded slowly with a malicious smile.

“Hey, Chopper, can you hear me?” yelled Shorty through the bars and down the tier.

“What’s up, Shorty?” yelled Chopper from a cell near the end of the row.

“Bring that book you told me about to the showers, bro. I want to read it!”

“Okay,” yelled Chopper.

Thirty minutes later, an announcement was made by a guard and all of the cell doors opened. 46 inmates lined up in a single file line and they were escorted to the shower area by four guards. The showers were situated both in an upstairs and downstairs area. After arriving, the guards directed half the men to go upstairs. Psycho and Shorty stayed somewhat close to Robert and followed him upstairs. Chopper quickly walked past Psycho and handed him a book. He remained downstairs and started chatting loudly with another inmate. About five minutes later, Chopper began yelling at the same inmate and they started fighting. It was exactly what Psycho told him to do to divert the attention of the guards upstairs.

Meanwhile, Robert was showering upstairs and wearing his white boxer shorts and the plastic shower shoes he purchased from the prison store. He heard the fighting downstairs but was unconcerned. As soon as the concrete floor became wet, he could only take small steps, otherwise, he would slip. He wondered why the prison would sell this type of shoe as it was an obvious hazard.

As soon as Psycho and Shorty heard the commotion, they waited for the guards to run downstairs. As soon as they were gone, they left the shower and quickly slipped on their tennis shoes because they didn’t want to slip on the wet floor.
